After the phantasmic 1815 multi eruption of Mount Tambora, the island of Sumbawa was buried in layer of ash averaged 50-60 centimeters deep, in waters closer to the volcano, the ash layer could reach over 3 meters. 

The eruption created vast fields of black volcanic sand environments which in turn led to a high density of rare and cryptic species—such as the Mimic Octopus, various Frogfish, and Rhinopias—that thrive in volcanic silt rather than traditional coral reefs. For divers and researchers, these species are "rare" globally but find a specific stronghold in the post-volcanic waters of Sumbawa.
